Golf at the edge of the Sinai desert

Sharm El Sheikh is known for its reefs. It also has an 18-hole championship course laid out between the mountains and the Red Sea — and, for the first time in nearly thirty years, a second one on the way.

The course

The championship course opened in 1996 as Jolie Ville Golf Club and is still the only 18-hole layout in Sharm El Sheikh. Since January 2025 it has been run by the Pickalbatros group, which took it on and put it through a restoration.

It plays to a par 72 over roughly 6,021 metres, with four sets of tees. Alongside the main loop there is a shorter par-3 course, a golf academy, a double-ended grass practice range, two putting greens and a pro shop.

The setting does most of the work: fairways cut into desert, the Sinai mountains on one side and the Red Sea on the other. It has hosted professional events, including seniors and challenge-tour tournaments.

The course is open to visiting players, not members only — which is why Sharm works as a golf stop at all rather than a resort curiosity.

When to play

The season runs opposite to Europe's. From November to April the daytime temperature sits in a range that makes eighteen holes pleasant rather than punishing, which is precisely when courses at home are frozen or waterlogged.

High summer is a different proposition. June through August regularly passes 40 °C, and play realistically means an early tee time or nothing. Shoulder months — May, October — are workable if you start early.

Getting there

Sharm El Sheikh International (SSH) takes direct flights from much of Europe, and the course sits a short drive from the airport and from the Naama Bay and Nabq hotel areas. For most visitors golf is a half-day inside a trip built around diving, the desert or simply the sea.

What is changing

In 2025 Talaat Moustafa Group announced a large mixed-use development on the Sharm El Sheikh coast that includes a second championship golf course. If it is built as announced, Sharm moves from a place with a golf course to a destination with a golf offering — a meaningful difference for anyone planning a week rather than a round.

No opening date has been published. Until one is, treat the second course as announced rather than available, and plan around the existing one.
